According to legend, caryatids owe their name to the inhabitants of the  Greek city of Caryes who had allied themselves with the Persians in the wars against Greece; after they were beaten, they are believed to have been wiped out and their wives made slaves and forced to carry heavy loads.

As for atlantes, they evoke Atlas who was condemned to carry the globe on his shoulders.
