Domes are thought to have first appeared in Mesopotamia.

Around 125 AD, the Romans built the Pantheon in Rome, a masterpiece of aesthetic and engineering prowess.

In 1436, Brunelleschi built the first modern dome for the cathedral of Florence.

For a long time, domes have remained the prerogative of great religious buildings because of their construction difficulties and cost.
