Covered markets: more than thirty markets were built in the second half of the 19th century so as to ensure the food supply for a fast-growing population; fewer than ten of them are still working; some were converted (Japy into a gym, Belleville into public baths, Montmartre into a museum);
others were demolished. These markets are typical examples of metal in Parisian architecture so fashionable at the time.
