Nowadays, there are people who bring up spiders in their sitting-room or who keep a boa-constrictor under the sideboard as a pet. In the old days, there were architects who didn’t think twice about displaying a taste for the exotic or the unusual on their façades and that makes for quite a variety of species:

a shark, a crocodile, a bear, a boar, another crocodile,

snakes (not poisonous ones we hope),

an octopus, some rats, a bat, a spider, another octopus:

elephants (singly or in groups) some accompanied by vultures and all on upper floors but also a wolf, a porcupine (emblem of King Louis XII) and even a beastly toad:

and then there are lions everywhere – but that’s a quite another story !
